My late grandma used to say that you can do that till Easter, my Italian colleagues think it's acceptable only till the Epiphany on January 6, my Irish colleagues just answer me "many happy returns to you too" without any comment, so I continue.

Any new year's resolution? This year I have made none. Because the things I'd like to promise myself and to others are always the same and I can't get them done anyway.

Have you seen a real snow this winter? I had to climb high on the Italian mountain to see and to touch it, where I could taste the delicious polenta with mushrooms. But as usual there was 1 hour snow in Dublin as well without actually staying on the streets. Happy winter to everyone!

travelling by reading

surrounded by zebra
Originally uploaded by renatela

I know when it started. I was waiting for the flight at Dublin's airport and as usual went to the bookshop to check for some book to read while on the airplane. The first book that got into my hands was the one about travelling around Ireland by Pete McCarthy "McCarthy's Bar: A Journey of Discovery in Ireland"and I read it with a great pleasure. I didn't realize at that time that something remained in my heart, something warm and jumpy every time I thought about some other travels.
And then I went to Africa. And then I came back. And now I'm just about to finish another travel book by Paul Theroux "Dark Star Safari" and as you can imagine it's about Africa. I don't know where it will end - but I'm keen on buying another travel book.

fresh milk

<span style="font-size: 0.9em; It happened many times that I was full of ideas and thoughts but never went that far to post them online.

Hey, I'm proudly presenting my new toy - Canon 400d SRL camera. I know that by using a better camera one is going to make definitely better photos, but I wish to try.

In these days I'm flying a lot, business and vacation reasons, so my only sincere companion is a book. I have just finished reading "Abortionist's Daughter" by Elisabeth Hyde and now reading "Dance Dance Dance" by Haruki Murakami (in Italian). I'm back to my Japanese period. Should check what my favorite Banana Yoshimoto has published recently. However, I was a bit sick of her interest in death.

That's all for now.

searching for the snow

So, the waiting is over and the date we write today has 2007 in it.

May this year help us all to start doing the things we really desire to do, to say words we never had an opportunity or courage to say, to learn and try something new... For the dessert she explained us that they have chocolate cake, strawberry cake and pear cake. We all asked for the pear one, but she didn’t understand or pretended not to and kept saying “pardon”… We tried to pronounce that damned word in all the possible ways we could, but honestly, when you have only 3 dessert choices… Finally the girl said, “oh, pear cake”. Of course! And that’s only one example of how Irish people don’t understand and don’t help the foreigners to be understood. In Italy this didn’t happen with me.

lined-up

today i didn't make any sky photo.

for the last couple of weeks every morning i saw some beautiful sky to photograph. today - NIENTE. maybe because of the hurricane-kind wind we had last night. so many trees have finished their life tonight.

everything is so chaotic and i have such a strong need of stability and arrangement.

do you know any spell to line-up one's life just like the wind did with these clouds?

Lithuania through the bus window

That's how much I saw of Lithuania during my last trip back home at the beginning of September. I knew it was going to be a short visit, but I didn't realize I was going to spend most of my time going by bus from one town to another - visiting my friends, my family, finishing up some business left from the last time I was home.
And it was quite nice time. In the mornings and in the evenings you could feel the cold autumn air and some trees already have got the special colour order for their leaves. But local people didn't agree it was an Indian summer, they hope to have something like that later on, maybe in October.
I'm talking a lot about the weather. That's what my brother says. He's complaining that the biggest part of my text message is devoted to the weather description. I'm worried - am I becoming an English culture person?
I just looked now through the window and saw the rain pouring down. Yes, I'm in Dublin.
What do you see through your window? Don't be afraid to talk about the weather.

summer sun is in this flower

Right. It's August already and seems that in Dublin the summer is finished. I'm looking to buy a new scarf, a new coat, a new... something to keep me warm and up in spirits as the Italians say. But instead of all that today I bought a new knife for our kitchen!! Huh, dangerous woman!

The other day I was remembering my trip to the USA 5 years ago and how fantastically lucky I was to come back home before the 11/9 events. The same thing happened this week - I flew from Italy changing planes at London Stansted airport couple hours before the whole "casino" (in Italian) happened... I am really lucky. Or not?

By the way, now that I fly several times a month with Ryanair I became a really good specialist of this airline - I always have an extra pullover to keep me warm as they like to freeze people in their planes a lot. And this time one of the flight attendant's name was...guess what... Ryan..:)

Ryan in the air.

Summer is finished. At least for me. It's so easy to say "ciao" or "hi" when you meet the same person several times of the day in Italy or in English speaking country and you know you had a CONTACT with a person. In Lithuania we don't use to say "labas" every time we meet the same person during the same day and I feel a bit weird - try to smile like saying "here we meet again", try to say or comment on something... Boh.. I prefer this "ciao" and "hi" - so easy, not involving and full of meaning.

It depends from what side you look...

This weekend I had organized another "international" evening for my italian master colleagues - my german friend was in Italy and he stopped by in Pavia.
Was funny to force myself to talk English again and to listen to italians explaining to a german guy about the life "with Silvio".
I need to brush up my English as the possibility of my transfer to Dublin is getting more and more real.

Cultural crossings

This weekend I was in Paris. The first thing I see - the "usual" notice about the delay of 1 hour of my train. OOOKKK..
I take another train and at some point of the road it stops. My "colleagues" of the "trip" start sweating. Right…. I take off my coat. The scarf on my neck becomes very heavy.
The voice of a man on the loudspeakers announces that this train will stop only at the central station of Milan. AHhh! But I must get off at another station of Milan, how do they dare to change the order? The train is full of angry voices. I'm not alone.
After some minutes, the same mane announces that the train will stop at other stations of Milan as well. OOKKK.. What a relief.
After some minutes, a new announcement - the train will stop at every intermediary stop! That means we'll be late! And we are JUST LATE.
After these announcements and after some minutes, and after some other minutes, and some other minutes again, the train starts moving. Yeah! And now it stops at every stop.
Perfect - my first day at work this year and I'm late for 40 minutes.
Just a perfect start of this year :)

kryzkele

Happy new year to everyone!
I hope the journey that we start this year will be rewarding, interesting and full of little discoveries...

The day of dejavù

It's October and I'm done with my master studies. It took me some time due to lack of connection to Internet and some problems with programs for uploading the albums. However, here I am. Give me some moment and the album of May will be there as well.
By the way, Happy start of the summer, today is the 1st of June - the day of children's defence if I'm not wrong. That was the holiday that I always waited for when was a little kid because during that day I was in the center of attention of my family and usually we went out and I could eat as much ice creams as I wanted and draw on the sidewalks with colourful crayons or what's their name... So, happy Children day!

My Inner European

Your Inner European is French!

Smart and sophisticated.
You have the best of everything - I felt it so strong some weeks ago but after the cold days came again. But today it's declared - I put on my new shoes :)

By the way, did you know that this weekend and today Italians are voting? yeah, regional elections. And for that they have to go to their town of residence - in Lithuania you can vote via post, here - no. Hm... It's like going to a human resources office of some big company to fill in your CV instead sending it by email. People enjoy some price reduction for train and ship fares - that's how government makes sure that people come home to vote. But what about air fares? Isn't "moderate electorate" (as they speak about Italians) supposed to travel home by airplanes?:)

All Friday and Saturday Italians were following the news about situation of Pope. There were some things that I liked about some tv broadcasts and something what I didn't like but the main idea I got - people here in Italy really do care. And they go to church. Unfortunately that's not so in Lithuania, according to www.delfi.lt of april 4, 2005.

Peace.

Good Friday

For the Easter holidays I'm back to Central-South Italy and yesterday I had an opportunity to see an ancient procession 'via Crucis' in Chieti.

It's said that it's the most ancient procession in Italy organized by fraternity 'del Sacro Monte'. The carried cross with 'Cristo morto' is followed by the statue of Madonna Addolorata and '7 mysteries of passion'. These are followed by 100 violinists and a large chorus and their canto is really giving some shivers, it's quite scary to see every member of procession with a hood - white, black or red... Aha, quite interesting, but many statistics...

Today I finally found a room to rent so tomorrow I'm moving in and leaving my hotel of 2 stars :) Which was quite nice, but too expensive for a student like me. Ok, so far the start seems ok. The people are great, very helpful and warm (in Italian style).

Another disgusting thing which waits for me is to get a permission for living in Italy. And here all the problems start, because in police (questura) officials tend not to know anything about Lithuania becoming a member of teh EU and new rules applied to Lithuanians for entering the country and living there. However, this week I will find out what they will tell me...

I'm sorry I left my photocamera in Termoli because here I don't have any pc to store my photos, because every morning I see something nice to photograph because Pavia is a nice place.

Ok, ciao, me ne vado..

Walking

I started my new way.

This week I spent 3 days in Pavia, where I got admitted to master studies of Market and society research, so from coming Monday I'm moving there.. All is ready and already baking, now I have to wait for 1 hour to see the result. The funny thing, at home I never made it myself, was always my mom to treat me with this delicious dish when I was returning home. Will see how I learned the lesson. Anyway, I shouldn't worry much - Italians have no idea how it must be so it will be ok in any way I manage to cook :)

Today I saw an impressive view. We were driving the road along the coast of Adriatic sea and I could see how furious and dangerous looked the sea today. Yesterday all the day was raining so many fields and places are flooded. Seems like the sea received a double doze of water too. Sometimes the waves were so strong and the colour of water so grey that I thought another "tsunami" is coming and the water will reach the road. The beach seemed disappeared, the waves were coming very high... And lots of seagulls gathered in the flooded fields along the road were trying to communicate us "The sea is coming to you!..."

Well, I was silent for some weeks. Not so easy, heh..:)

I can buy you, but what's of that...
cheers!

Feeling like at home

... because finally saw the snow! Roads are difficult to go, cars are without winter tyres so are dancing on the roads like cows on the ice, schools are closed etc. All TV news programmes have what to talk, what to show... Mamma mia!

I'm looking at that and remembering winter in Lithuania. Snow? If it's winter it should be snowing. The more snow the better. Freezing? Yes, that's the whole fun! Schools closed? Only when the temperature falls bellow -25C°. When I was a kid, I remember checking the radio every early winter morning hoping to hear that today I could stay at home... Well, that happy day was once or twice...

Why this "snow" thing is so different for these two countries? Italians aren't used to that? Aren't prepared? Landscape (mountains) makes it more difficult to fight against the snow? Yeah, most likely... But for example here, near the sea, we had some rain and it's around +2C°. When I was back to Lithuania hearing this I would say "Gosh, well this is not cold at all!". But beeing here I agree with everyone complaining and say "Cold!.." Maybe because of the humid weather. Maybe because it's winter and if now we don't say that it's cold, when will we have another opportunity to use that word?

By the way, in Italian "caldo" means "hot". Being here I feel I am constricted by many unwritten rules which by now (after more than 6 months) are almost normal for me but still sometimes I realize that back in Lithuania we don't do so.

Ok, for example, time schedule for major event of the day - EATING:) Lunch - most likely will be at 1pm. Dinner - in Centro Sud, where I live, most likely will start at 8-9 pm.

Another thing related to EATING, it's what Italians eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I remember once visiting Firenze and tired after long walk in the city we were searching for a place for lunch and I offered to go to pizzeria. "What, pizza for lunch?!!" Well, after 6 months I wouldn't make that mistake and now I search only for some dish with pasta :) But when you approach with this question an Italian, most likely he will answer "ma dai, we eat everything, there's no such rule..."

Ok, I'm not trying to generalize here, I know, there's no rule without an exception and south and north of Italy are two different regions with many different customs and habits. Just wanted to share this with you today. Maybe next time I will remember something else about the life by unwritten rules, because I had noticed something else... just don't remember now!:) I should hurry up to write down all what I see now because after some time it will not seem strange for me. It's like in an organizational practice - a smart manager would ask his new employee to describe all what seems strange to him in the organization, organizational culture, because only in this way they can learn something about themselves... Ok, finito now.

Non ce la faccio

Today is one of these days, when I lose my courage and energy to fight and to go forward. Spent half of evening on internet filling in my CV in various job search websites, but... what the result will be? So far it's nothing. And with every day my hope to find some work for me is becoming smaller and smaller. You think I'm being pesimistic? I would say - realistic.

In Lithuanian we have a saying "Geriau zvirblis rankoje negu briedis miske" which means something like "It's better a sparrow in a hand than an elk in a forest" (I'm sure in English there's a similar proverb). Usually I try to grab that sparrow and this week, probably the first time in my life, I had to reject it in the name for "better opportunity in the future". Maybe that's why I feel like I'm doing something wrong. I knew what to expect from Chinese movie. Of course they there fighting while flying in the woods, jumping up to the sky, moving like in "Matrix", but that's how we expect Chinese movie to be, no? One thing what took me by surprise was how fast the story evolved. I got an impression that the plot is a bit confusing and in order to make it shorter film director 'jumped over' some parts of the story. That's what seemed to me. And it's more like a film about impossible love than about martial arts. Who says that's bad?:) Anyway, film ends in death. And with lots of snow. I was wondering, what kind of snow was that / seemed like a wet heavy snow...

By the way, I've been to cinemas in the UK, the USA, Finland, Lithuania, but only here in Italy they interrupt the movie to make a some minutes break. Linking photos from my photoblog at www.flickr.com.

But today I was thinking to write about my experience in Italian bank. It's not the first time I enter there but every time I get amazed how deserted and un-managed they are. In Lithuania banks are always full of people - employees and customers. Here, in Italy, it's always empty, only one teller's window is open and the guy (haven't seen any women working in a bank yet!!!) is so slow, like he would have all the time in the world. Today, while I waited, some customers came in and a lovely line of 10 people were formed while the same lonely employee guy was incredibly slowly typing his "whatever" he had to type and other bank clerks could be heard loudly talking in their backside offices. Hm... where's orientation for the clients, eh???

Welcome myself

Yes, that's it. I did it. It's my - don't know which - blog. But let's be optimistic, shall we. WHO knows, maybe it will become my the only and favorite blog. I certainly have what to say. No, not that somebody needs to hear that. I have what to say for myself, out and loudly. Right.

In which language should I write?
